Clash of Clans heroes guide

Heroes are the most powerful — and slowest — upgrades in Clash of Clans. They fight in every attack, defend your base while their timer is idle, and their levels do more to win wars than almost any defense. This guide covers each hero’s role, how to prioritise their upgrades, and how hero equipment reshapes attacking.

The five heroes

Barbarian King

Unlocks TH7Dark Elixir

Ground tank & cleanup. The King soaks damage, wrecks buildings, and his Iron Fist ability spawns Barbarians and briefly boosts his damage — perfect for punching into a base or finishing a raid.

Archer Queen

Unlocks TH9Dark Elixir

The carry of most attacks. High single-target DPS and range let her snipe key defenses; her Royal Cloak turns her invisible and heals her, so a well-levelled Queen with a Queen Charge can solo half a base.

Grand Warden

Unlocks TH11Elixir

A force multiplier, not a damage dealer. He buffs nearby troops with the Life Aura and his Eternal Tome makes your whole army invulnerable for a few seconds — the difference between a wiped push and a three-star. Toggle him between ground and air to follow your main force.

Royal Champion

Unlocks TH13Dark Elixir

A defense-hunter. She leaps over walls and her Seeking Shield ricochets to destroy targeted defenses outright, making her ideal for taking out Inferno Towers and Scattershots ahead of your army.

Minion Prince

Unlocks TH9 (Builder-hall crossover / newest home hero)Dark Elixir

The newest home-village hero. A flying hero with strong ranged damage that adds an air-based threat to your hero line-up, opening up new hybrid air/ground pushes.

Why heroes gate war performance

In war, you attack a base at your own Town Hall level or higher, and the gap between a three-star and a two-star is often just a few hero levels. A max-level Queen survives long enough to complete a Queen Charge; an under-levelled one dies to the first Inferno. Because heroes are always in your army, every hero level raises the ceiling of every attack you ever make — unlike a single defense, which only helps on the occasional defense.

This is exactly why over-rushing hurts: a TH15 with TH11 heroes simply cannot execute TH15 attacks, no matter how good the player is. Heroes are the true measure of an account’s war strength.

Hero upgrade priority

  • Never leave a hero altar idle. Hero upgrades run on their own timer, separate from Builders, so start one the instant a hero is home. Downgrade your dark-farming standards before you let a hero sit un-upgraded.
  • Queen and Warden lead. The Archer Queen (your damage carry) and Grand Warden (your army-saving ability) contribute most to offense, so favour them when you can only push one.
  • Use the “Book of Heroes” on your longest upgrade to skip the wait, and the potions/hammers you earn on the highest-level hero available.
  • Keep them within a few levels of each other. A balanced hero line-up flexes into more army compositions than one maxed hero and three weak ones.

Hero equipment overview

Hero Equipment lets you slot two pieces of gear onto each hero, swapping their abilities for new ones. Gear is levelled with Starry Ore and Glowy Ore (and Shiny Ore for common pieces), earned from the daily Trader and events. A few staples every player chases:

  • Barbarian King — the Rage Vial and Earthquake Boots, or the Giant Gauntlet for a beefy tank that shrugs off point defenses.
  • Archer Queen — the Archer Puppet plus the Invisibility Vale or Giant Arrow, the backbone of the classic Queen Charge.
  • Grand Warden — the Eternal Tome and the Healing Tome or Fireball, which adds a direct-damage nuke to clear a compartment.
  • Royal Champion — the Seeking Shield and Royal Gem / Rocket Spear for extra defense-sniping burst.

Equipment upgrades are account-wide power that don’t use Builders or the Lab, so level your favourite pieces alongside everything else — they meaningfully lift attacks at every Town Hall from TH8 onward.
